Kempinski Hotels Takes Steps Towards Cage-Free Commitments: An Update from Animal Welfare League

In the ongoing mission to improve animal welfare standards in the hospitality industry, Kempinski Hotels, which operates in four countries in Africa namely Ghana, Kenya, Egypt and Djibouti, has recently shared progress on its cage-free commitment. Kempinski Hotels was selected as the primary target for regional reporting in Africa for 2024 as part of the Animal Welfare League's role as the Global Outreach Strategy Leader for the Open Wing Alliance groups in Africa.

Collaboration and Initial Success

Working in collaboration with Mercy for Animals, The Humane League, and other dedicated organizations, the Animal Welfare League leading the OWA Africa coalition as its Global Strategy Leader, has pushed for more transparency and accountability from Kempinski Hotels. This advocacy has led to Kempinski Hotels reporting regionally, albeit in a combined block for their properties in Africa.

Kempinski Hotels’ recently published 2023 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report outlined their progress towards cage-free commitments. Globally, 33% of their hotels are now wholly cage-free, with an additional 48% partially cage-free. These figures represent a significant step forward, but the goal remains for all hotels to source 100% cage-free eggs by 2030.

What to Expect Next

The Animal Welfare League hopes Kempinski Hotels can start reporting country level under their regional reporting. We will monitor Kempinski Hotels’ commitments and provide updates as we receive more detailed information.
