Animal Welfare League Training Series

Animal Welfare League Training Series

Introduction

Welcome to a commentary on training undertaken by the Animal Welfare League (AWL). This will be a series of commentary on skills and knowledge building undertaken by Animal Welfare League staff as part of our staff development and the vision of being an effective animal advocacy organisation in Africa. This is a result of our commitment to being an organisation of continual learning for better execution of our mission in Africa.

TLDR about AWL

Animal Welfare League is an animal advocacy organization based in Ghana, west Africa, dedicated to farm animal welfare advocacy in Africa.

The organization has secured four cage-free corporate commitments in Ghana since 2023 and built the first cage-free directory and network of egg producers in Africa, with over 850,000 hens committed to cage-free housing in Ghana. Animal Welfare League is also leading the Open Wing Alliance Africa groups campaigns and outreach to global companies in Africa, ensuring accountability, transparency, and equity in animal welfare commitments by companies headquartered in North America, Europe, and elsewhere in the world.

Leadership Training with Scarlet Spark

In this initial piece, Animal Welfare League partnered with Scarlet Spark to undertake a special curated leadership training. The two organizations identified the relevant training needs of Animal Welfare League and established two goals. The training was then executed over three months through the following workshops: Leadership Essentials, Time Effectiveness, Feedback Skills, and Strategic Thinking. Our goals going into the training were:

(i) to improve staff collaboration and timely communication

(ii) to improve our decision-making system

As a result of these workshops, we have formalized certain norms, fine-tuned some, and developed new norms. Below are what the training has enabled us to unearth, revisit, and adopt new practices to meet our stated goals.

Organizational Health: Role clarity, Foundational Skills, Value Alignment & Feedback channels.

Productivity: Decision-making system, Prioritization, Collaborative working system, & Assessments.

Appreciation

We want to express our gratitude to the staff at Scarlet Spark, especially Tania Luna and Sherleen Benalvo, for running the workshops and guiding our conversations. We also want to thank Stien van der Ploeg for making the introduction at the Animal & Vegan Summit 2023.
